How to Best Help your Swimmer

Here are some ways that parents can help (or hinder):

  • Give plenty of encouragement to your swimmer, and don't expect improvement at every meet.
  • Help your child concentrate on his or her own performance, and not worry about what other swimmers are doing.
  • Don't try to correct your child's stroke. If you are worried about it, have your child ask their coach.
  • By all means watch practices, but don't try to talk to your child or coach during them.
  • At meets, don't argue with officials. If there is any apparent cause for dispute, leave it to the coach.
  • Ask for the coach's advice before you enter your child in a meet that the team is not officially attending.
  • If you have any complaints, first try to talk with your child's coach then the head age group coach, the head coach and finally the Board of Directors. There may be a good explanation for whatever is troubling you, or perhaps it can be easily fixed.
